Concepts

We sketch, illustrate and visualise the best ideas into tangible 3D models, renderings, representing winning design for your products. We use a variety of tools to visualise concepts depending on the product character and the set objectives. We apply quick pen or pencil sketches, digital drawings with Procreate, SketchBook, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and more for idea exploration and 3D renderings with Rhino, Fusion360 and many more tools to create convincing concept images for idea evaluation.

Rapid Prototyping

We have been investing in rapid prototyping technology from early on and we have an in-house fully equipped workshop for making mockups, CNC-machined or 3D printed prototypes (SLA and SLS) for fit check assemblies, ergonomic testing and physical presentations.

Detailed Design

It allows us to design innovative products by choosing, developing, adjusting and integrating the most appropriate mechanisms, electronics, actuators and sensors. We apply conscious technological optimisation already in the early product design process stages, which accelerates the design process and guarantees that the final design is already prepared, optimised for the best fitting manufacturing technologies and materials. Engineering

We provide engineering for product enclosures whether for prototyping or final production made of plastics via technologies like injection moulding but also engineer for you frames and mechanisms made of metal using CNC, laser-cut, bending, punching, welding and more. We have deep knowledge and experience for engineering principles, which allows us to come up with the best possible solutions for your production preferences and manufacturing requirements.

User Experience

We regard the approach to how to design an innovative and successful new product, dependent on how well the user will embrace it. This is the reason we apply a holistic user-centred approach when creating new products. It is for us irrelevant if the product is a physical or digital one or even a smart/IoT product incorporating both physical and digital interfaces. You can call it Human Factors, Ergonomics, Interaction, HCI design, but at the end of the day it is about understanding the users' behaviour and take them seriously into account. What is important is the way the user use their senses to interact with the product and how well the product fulfils their needs.

User Interface

We know that when the discussion is about a User Interface, it is mostly about apps running on smart devices like phones and tablet. Nevertheless, a User Interface is the part of the product, that the user can use to communicate and control the product. We think that even if an interface is a digital one with elements and buttons displayed on a screen or a physical one with levers, knobs and sliders, it is important to remember that it is always a finger, an eye and a brain that the user used to access the interface.

Design for Plastics

We never forget to start a project with a Discovery phase, which helps us define the design requirements in a detailed manner. One of the many factors we take seriously is how the product is going to be manufactured and what materials and what production technologies are going to be used. When designing product enclosures to be produced using injection moulding, special knowledge of how to design forms considering necessary tolerances, fixtures, undercut avoidance and more, is essential and we have a proven record of creating spotless designs for plastic parts.

Automotive Design

We design exteriors and interiors for vehicles powered by conventional or modern power sources like muscle, gasoline, electricity or solar energy. We use conventional techniques like pencil and pen sketches on paper but also digital sketches using ProCreate, Sketchbook, Adobe Fresco on Apple iPad and Wacom tablets, all the way to using software handling class-A surface design standards from Autodesk.

Smart Home and IoT

We all witness how our living environment is affected and changed by technology. Smart products which connect to a network at home or IoT (Internet of Things) devices for a smart home or Industry 4.0 are increasingly assigned to us as design projects. We love designing new innovative products based on physical and digital parts and we are very experienced in understanding and handling intricate electronic components and enclose them into products, which are intuitive and easy to use.

Medical Technology

We passionately design products incorporating medical technology around groundbreaking innovative achievements of brilliant scientific teams around the world. We have methods for meeting the strict requirements set by medical certifications for medical-grade materials and processes, as well as certified handling and management of sensitive personal patient data.

Design Research

We love our role as creators and innovators but we also love exploring ways to advance design further through scientific research. We participate in European research projects and we collaborate with international teams consisting of partners like established companies, research centres and academic institutions. As teams, we respond to the need for pushing the boundaries of science and technology and set the base for discovering new useful and disruptive application methods.

Manufacturing Consulting and Sourcing

We have amassed over the years a wide network and knowledge of selected suppliers for any kind of services relative to the design & development process of creating a new product and preparing it for a market launch. We can suggest and bring you in contact with materials, components and manufacturing suppliers for all the stages from simple proof-of-concept to intricate final working prototypes.

Who we are

Alex Didaskalou

Alex is the General Director of Designlab. He is very experienced in complex industrial design products and is equally well skilled at successfully meeting both creative and engineering challenges. He holds an MA in Design Products from the Royal College of Art and a Diplom in Industrial Design from the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. Alex speaks english, german, greek, italian and spanish.

Dr. Miltiadis Kourbetis

Miltiadis is an expert advisor on Business Development and Project Management. He holds an MSc and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College and a BEng (Hons) from Brunel University.

Dr. John Alexiou

John is an expert advisor on materials for mass production and injection moulding technologies. John holds a PhD in Polymer Chemistry from the University of Cambridge and an MSc and BASc in Chemistry. He is also a visiting researcher at University of Marburg and Cornell University.

Ruprecht Fass

Ruprecht is a Dipl. Industrial Designer advising on new product concepts and development. He holds a Diplom in Industrial Design from the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig and has a professional experience of over 20 years, designing products for the german and international market.

Evangelos Giaglisis

Evangelos is a Mechanical Engineer consulting on mechanical engineering for smart products, robotics and automation mechanisms.

John Valvis

John is a Mechanical Engineer consulting on product mechanical design and engineering for products and systems including robotic components.
